Continuous Positive Airway Pressure and its Indications
Kim Ji-Eun

Abstract
Nasal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is the treatment of choice for moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea-hyponea syndrome. At appropriate set pressure, CPAP is almost always effective for this syndrome. However, its major disadvantage is that it does not confer a cure to this disorder and hence therapy is generally life long with its usual treatment compliance problems. The main limitations to CPAP usage are lack of patient acceptance and lack of tolerance of treatment. Auto-CPAP is a major technological step forward in CPAP development, but its widespread applicability will depend on studies showing cost benefit, improved compliance, and better health outcomes for these devices.
